The 3SGTE Turbocharged Engine

The Toyota 3SGTE engine was produced from 1986 to 2007 and was used in various Toyota models, including the MR2, Celica, and Caldina. It was based on the non-turbo 3SGE engine, but with a turbocharger, lower compression ratio, and under-piston oil squirters.

Production years:

1986–1988: GEN1 3SGTE engine was produced in both Japan and North America - used in the Celica alltrac (ST165)

1990–1995 USDM, 1990-1993 JDM: GEN2 3SGTE engine was used in the Celica GT-Four (ST185) and USDM MR2 (SW20)

1994–1999: GEN3 3SGTE engine was used in the Celica GT-Four (ST205) and MR2 (SW20)

1998–2007: GEN4 3SGTE engine was used in the Caldina GT-T (ST215W) and GEN5 3SGTE in the Caldina GT-Four (ST246W)

Features:
- Cast Iron Block with Aluminum alloy cylinder head and pistons
- 16-valve dual overhead cam (DOHC) cylinder head
- Single-timing belt drives the exhaust, intake camshaft, water, and oil pumps
- Pistons have an indentation to prevent them from hitting the valves if the timing belt breaks (non-interference engine)

GEN1 3SGTE 1987-1988 - Celica Alltrac (ST165)

This engine is exclusive to the 1987-1988 Celica Alltrac ST165 only. There were not many made and most parts are exclusive to the Gen1 3SGTE. This notably has a 6-bolt flywheel and parts only designed for the Celica. If you are searching for parts for this engine, I'd recommend checking ebay or the facebook part out groups. Prime MR2 does not have any parts available for this platform. Stock Horsepower is 185

GEN3 3SGTE 1994-1999 - MR2 Turbo JDM

Seen above is the Gen3 3SGTE from the JDM version of the 1994-1999 Toyota MR2 Turbo. This engine features: No Air Flow Meter (map sensor based), factory catch can on left side of valve cover, revised smoother rounder intake manifold, pcv valve on right side of valve cover, thin 7mm spark plug wires with "clip on plastic connectors" to the distributor cap, No EGR pipe on left side of head. This engine also has 550cc injectors compared to the 440cc of the Gen2 engine. Turbo is upgraded to the CT20 over the stock CT26 on the Gen2 engines. Stock Horsepower is 240

GEN3 3SGTE 1994-99 - Celica GT Four JDM

Seen above is the Gen3 3SGTE from the JDM version of the 1994-1999 Toyota Celica GT Four. This engine is the same as the MR2 variant with the exception of the accesorry placement and Air to Water Intercooler. Features: No Air Flow Meter (map sensor based), factory catch can on left side of valve cover, revised smoother rounder intake manifold, pcv valve on right side of valve cover, thin 7mm spark plug wires with "clip on plastic connectors" to the distributor cap, No EGR pipe on left side of head. GEN4 3SGTE 1998-2002 - Caldina GTT ST215 JDM

Seen above is the Gen4 3SGTE from the JDM 1998-2002 Toyota Caldina GTT (ST215). This engine has all the upgrades from the previous generations and is what put PRIME MR2 on the map circa 2012 as the go-to source for Gen4 swaps. Many upgrades but not limited to: side feed intake manifold, top feed fuel injectors, modern ecu, coil packs instead of distributor, integrated turbo/manifold... Pictured above is how it looks in the Caldina and to the right is typical install into a 91-99 MR2. This is the most identifiable 3SGTE due to its the only one with a side feed intake manifold. Its also the best looking and easiest to wire and plumb Turbo is upgraded to the CT15. Stock Horsepower is 260

GEN5 3SGTE 2002-2007 - Caldina GTT ST246 JDM

Seen above is the Gen5 3SGTE from the JDM 2002-2007 Toyota Caldina GTT (ST246). This engine is nearly identical to the Gen4 with just a few exceptions. Toyota went back to the center feed intake manifold and catch can, Also included are new style top feed fuel injectors, modern ecu, coil packs instead of distributor, integrated turbo/manifold... Pictured above is how it looks in the Caldina and to the right is typical install into a 91-99 MR2. This is the most identifiable 3SGTE due to its the only one with a center feed intake manifold, catch can on left side of valve cover, pcv pointing towards right side of timing cover, plastic topped coil packs, loads of wiring on top of valve cover to coils and sensors bolted to intake manifold.
